First there was the time I asked for a lobster roll and was told "we don't serve sushi". Two months later, my search for fried dough led me to an elephant ear stand.

<picture></picture>
Montreal-style Bagels

Well, today I came across another interesting one. Evidently, most of Canada and the Pacific Northwest region prefers Montreal-style bagels, which represent a departure from the larger, more doughy, New York-style bagels I grew up with in Western Connecticut (and prefer). Yes, Montreal-style bagels look and taste different, so it makes sense they'd have a unique name, but it still made me chuckle.

First pizza, now bagels. Who knew?

We're Moving Back East2019-03-28T00:00:00Z/journal/moving-back-east/
And just like that we're moving back east. The West Coast is a glorious place but Kileen and I could never quite find a natural fit for our lifestyles. I still think Seattle is my favorite city out there, but we're ready to begin our second stint in Washington, D.C.

<picture></picture>
Georgetown C&O Canal

We were able to find a lovely rowhouse in our favorite neighborhood right next to Georgetown University. We already remember all our favorite spots and we're happy to see they've improved the coffee situation.

On Transitions2020-03-05T00:00:00Z/journal/on-transition/
One day after this photo was taken off the beautiful coastline of Cabo San Lucas, we arrived back in the states to a novel virus, COVID-19, and preventative lockdown.

<picture></picture>
Cabo just before the end of days.

I'm amazed at how quickly things change even day to day. Hoping for the best.

On Finding New Traditions2020-04-04T00:00:00Z/journal/on-finding-traditions/
In the midst of this pandemic, Kileen and I find ourselves cooking more often. There's something special about a moment when you realize you're in the process of creating a new tradition. Excuse the imperfectly cropped photo that follows.

<picture></picture>
Smørrebrød

We're already infatuated with Danish culture^[All of Scandinavia, really.] but adding smørrebrød to our repertoire is immediately a hit.

On Fresh Designs2020-06-11T17:30:31Z/journal/new-cms-new-design/
Over the years I've realized I'm a terribly inconsistent writer. I've started a half dozen blogs^[Socialitis.com, Devgear.com, LeftAtSunrise.com, PaulLegan.com, AudioGizmo.com, and finally Paul.io. Sadly, many of those have devolved into parked domains or otherwise spammy sites.] since 2005 and haven't seemed to write more than 40-50 posts on any one of them despite (1) putting in the work to learn various CMS tools and (2) putting in the thought behind various redesigns. That said, here we are with a fresh design and an optimistic outlook on writing frequency.

First, let's start with a comparison of this latest design with the previous.

Old Design

New Design

In reality, the design hasn't drastically changed. What's different, however, is the CMS (I've migrated from Jekyll to Hugo) and a modernization of the CSS that renders each site. I've fully embraced CSS variables and minimized a lot of the cruft I usually include in a base template (without sacrificing solid typography).

::root {
--font-default: clamp(18px, 1.4vw, 22px);
--font-tiny: 0.8rem;
--font-s: 0.87rem;
--font-m: 1.1rem;
--font-l: 1.4rem;
--font-xl: 1.7rem;
}

Additionally, I took a little more care in how I approached Hugo shortcodes to showcase common elements in my posts. I've included shortcodes for comparison sliders (like the one above), asides, terminal commands, and other widgets that will (hopefully) make their way into my writing here.

Anyway, I hope to share some of my newly-learned Hugo and style tricks in future posts. Thanks for stopping by!

On Making the Best of Things2020-10-10T00:00:00Z/journal/on-making-the-best-of-things/
So far COVID has merely altered our travel plans, not squelched them. We've found ourselves in St. Michaels, MD, which deserves to be the focal point of a future post due to its unique and cozy atmosphere.

We've also frequented Old Town, Alexandria, VA for spontaneous staycations, and we have our eye on Charlottesville, VA.

<picture></picture>
Dessert with a view in The Bowery

More recently, we snuck away to New York City for a couple nights. And yes, it was chock full of pizza and bagels as one might expect.

So perhaps this year France went out the door. But in truth, we've found fun in many new places and I'm not in a position to complain.

Made it to Charlottesville2020-11-30T00:00:00Z/journal/made-it-to-charlottesville/
I had alluded to our desire to visit the small town of Charlottesville, VA in a previous post and we finally pulled the trigger on a wine crawl to get us there. Boy, did it over-deliver. First, Luce Pasta.

It was borderline freezing this weekend so having a piping-hot, delicious treat was especially amazing. Second, wine country.

<picture></picture>
Grapes Ready for Pick-up; Credit: King Family Vineyards

I know Virginia wines are not exactly world renown but the experience of getting on a shuttle with 10 other like-minded, wine lovers to tear through 4-5 wineries on a sunny day is hard to beat. So, that's what we did.

We recommend the Roseland if you do stop by King Family Vineyards.

Washington Holiday Markets are Here2020-12-06T00:00:00Z/journal/dc-holiday-markets/
I'm grateful DC is still having a few holiday markets despite everything going on in the world with COVID-19. We went to a beautiful one at Victura Park at the JFK Performing Arts Center.

2020 Year In Review2020-12-24T00:00:00Z/journal/2020-year-in-review/
This is my first "year in review" post but I'd love to make it something I can reflect back on for years to come. And what a year to start this idea!

2020 was a year like none other for a majority of the world. COVID-19 took each country by storm and really didn't relent. What seemed like a ho-hum start to a new year suddenly accelerated aspects of life that were several years away from mass adoption like remote work and teleconferencing.^[3|SHARE has been doing this for 9 years, but happy the rest of the world is catching up!]

It was a year of canceled flights (Seattle, Paris, California, London), closed restaurants, polarized politics to a level previously unseen, and deserted streets. But that paints only the grim side of things.

<picture></picture>
Deserted downtown DC on a weekday at lunch

It was also a year of newfound places and traditions. Some of these include:

Walks around Georgetown including Dumbarton Oaks.

Trips to St. Michaels, Maryland and Charlottesville, Virginia.

So many cheese boards and smørrebrød!

Lox bagel Sundays and Sushi Mondays.

I'm thankful for my health, my lovely wife, and my family. I look forward with hope to 2021.

A Parking Lot Christmas to Remember2021-01-10T00:00:00Z/journal/on-covid-christmas/
My family decided the safest way to meet up and exchange gifts this year was to pick a meeting place somewhere between Connecticut and DC, which turned out to be a Wegmens in Mount Laurel, NJ.

It was a lot of fun and I will certainly never forget it. Despite everything, I'm very grateful to have had the chance we did.

On Snow in Washington2021-01-31T00:00:00Z/journal/on-snow-in-dc/
Snow in Washington, D.C. happens maybe a handful of times every year. But snow that allows for even the tiniest snowpeople is rare.

<picture></picture>
Snowperson in Washington

I'm chilly, but I'm by the fireplace. And without a car to worry about the snow can be very beautiful.

On Inspired Wallpaper2021-03-07T00:00:00Z/journal/on-wallpaper/
We decided to go into Old Town, Alexandria, VA again for a night away from home. Our typical plan is to start at the Kimpton social hour and mosy on down King Street to all the historic bars and restaurants. Then this happened.

Now admittedly I'm not generally a wallpaper guy, but this immediately catches my eye in the bathroom of our favorite pub.

<picture></picture>
Beautiful Wallpaper in a Bar Bathroom

I got home and opened 30 tabs in search of more inspired colors and patterns for our home. Fortunately, this one is for sale if I decide to go that route.

On Vaccines2021-04-01T00:00:00Z/journal/on-vaccines/
Finally there might be a path out of this pandemic. Thanks to incredible science, and incredible scientists, we now have at least three viable vaccines for COVID-19. Today I received dose number one of Moderna. Huzzah!

<picture></picture>
I'm vaxxed!

I know the concept of vaccines is polarizing. I also know this vaccine comes at a particularly politically-charged moment in history. But I, for one, am relieved to have access to this modern marvel.

My Current Workspace2021-05-07T00:00:00Z/journal/my-workspace/
We ran a contest at 3|SHARE where everyone had to submit a picture of their favorite tools and, ideally, a picture of their workspace. To give context, we've always been a fully remove company so we never went into a central office (way before COVID).

<picture></picture>
My current workspace

I don't enjoy clutter and generally manage to avoid it. My desk environment is meant to be productive and clean - it helps that it needs to sit within an 820 sq.ft. row house.

As I'm typing this, I realize it must be time to update my Colophon with recent purchases.

Many Masks of 20212021-05-09T00:00:00Z/journal/many-masks-of-2021/
My mom has taken to making masks for all of us in the family and they really are fun. Goes to show you how one can take a negative situation and turn it positive.

<picture></picture>
Many, many masks lead to many, many comments.

While I hope these become part of a quilt sooner rather than later, I'm grateful to have them now.

Celebrating our Second Doses2021-05-18T00:00:00Z/journal/celebrating-vaccination/
In celebration of our second dose of the Moderna vaccine,^[Cold sweats, shakes, and soreness in my arm. Well, well worth it.] we snuck in a trip to a few of our favorite spots in Northern California. Our trip started in San Francisco so we immediately got Cheese Board Pizza and walked around Berkeley.

Tucked away spot called Little Normandy

Then we headed up to Napa to spend a few days tasting all our favorite wines. It wouldn't be a Napa trip without a trip to the girl and the fig for mussels and cocktails.

<picture></picture>
the girl and the fig mussels

And then finally we headed to where we ultimately always end up: Carmel-by-the-Sea. To say this enchanting town is our favorite place is truly an understatement. This time we stayed in the downtown area instead of just over Route 1 in the valley.

<picture></picture>
Carmel Beach vibes; Credit: City of Carmel

I've never found a more tranquil atmosphere than in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It is certainly our happy place.

Our Thing for Rowhouses2021-08-31T00:00:00Z/journal/our-thing-for-rowhouses/
Kileen and I are ardent minimalists so our love for small (but not tiny) houses serves us quite well. Not only do we really need to think about what we buy, but we also need each item to serve at least two purposes.

Today we closed on a Trinity-style house in Center City, Philadelphia. With Kileen in a master's program for Marriage and Family Therapy at a local university, we needed a plan once COVID allowed for in-person classes.

<picture></picture>
Our very colonial street in Philadelphia

Our street and our new home are as cozy as it gets. Also, buying a home remotely is very difficult so we're grateful for our wonderful realtor.

We're excited to explore Philadelphia!

On Garlic2021-10-04T00:00:00Z/journal/on-garlic/
My family loves garlic. Each year, my mom plants more than 20 types (species) of garlic in her garden and we feast for the following year. It is glorious.

This weekend we met them in upstate New York for the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival. While they basically know my mom's name after all these years, this was a first for Kileen and me.

<picture></picture>
Garlic ice cream in Saugerties, NY

The entire atmosphere was great. The garlic was bountiful. Garlic pierogies, garlic curry, and - you guessed it - garlic ice cream. Tasted amazing - every bit of it.

More Tools Than Posts2021-12-07T00:00:00Z/journal/more-tools-than-posts/
And just like that I've managed to switch my CMS more often than I've actually written in the CMS. Or so it seems.

I've decided to refresh the site to align better with my principles of minimalism and get-out-of-my-own-way-ism. Here is the result. Let's do a little comparison like my last one.

A couple things of note:

No JavaScript necessary. I have a few pieces planned that will use Alpine.js but I'll conditionally load it if truly needed.

Massively simplified codebase for mundane things like margins and spacing.

Oh yeah. I'm now using Eleventy instead of Hugo. I like the flexibility and simple configuration.

One Touch Rule2021-12-08T00:00:00Z/journal/one-touch-rule/
My wife sent me a TikTok video last night^[Yes, that's where we are in life right now.] about a concept I had not heard before. The idea is not new by any stretch but I found it immediately applicable. In a nutshell...

Touch each task only once.

Do it properly and thoroughly when you do.

That could mean when you take off your jacket after you get home, you put it away in the closet instead of leaving it on the couch. Or it could mean only responding to an email when you have the time to fully handle it.

In other words, avoid multiple touches, half-finished tasks, and inefficiency.

2021 Year In Review2021-12-31T00:00:00Z/journal/2021-year-in-review/
Welp, here we are. Another year dominated by COVID-19 in the books. And yet there were definitely a few pleasant surprises amidst the gloom and doom of the pandemic.

First, we bought a house in Philadelphia, which would have been a complete surprise to us at the beginning of the year.

Second, Philadelphia really has won us over. It was basically love at first site and now has us puzzled over where to spend most of our time between DC and Philly.^[An early indicator might be that we were in Philadelphia for both Christmas and now New Year's...]

Third, we quadrupled our time spent with family in Connecticut (as compared to 2020) thanks to vaccines, boosters, and masks everywhere.

<picture></picture>
Family Time = Arts & Crafts

And lastly, even as cases have skyrocketed over the past week due to the Omicron variant, we're rolling into 2022 as hopeful as ever that the new year will be a good one. Cheers!

Brrr - Cold, Not Colder2022-01-26T00:00:00Z/journal/brrr-it-is-cold/
Two snowstorms into this winter season - and with another one on the way - I have made it up in my head that it has been unseasonably cold in both DC and Philadelphia and I Don't Like It™.^[I base this on the layers I'm wearing versus the cold I'm feeling along with the fact our walking totals are down around 25% year-over-year for the same days.]

So in a moment of boredom, I took a look at Wunderground's weather data for the past two months to test this freezing hypothesis. Needless to say I was absolutely shocked to find out that this season is basically par for the course in both cities.

In Washington, D.C., the average daily high was 55 degrees F in December and 43 so far in January.^[I realize a better measure than average daily high is average temperature overall, but those numbers aligned with these findings.]

Philadelphia came up just colder at 52 and 41 degrees F, respectively.

With a few more Google searches, I came to understand these numbers fit very neatly into the normal ranges for both cities. Even taking out a few outlier days in the high 60s and it still doesn't quite align with my feelings.

Well, color me green and call me a pickle.

Anyway, it got me thinking about the things I feel are true on a daily basis^[Everything from the price of a bagel being too high to the amount of time it takes to walk somewhere.] and let shape my view of that particular thing, but I do not take the time to verify.

Old Dog, New-ish Tricks2022-02-24T00:00:00Z/journal/old-dog-newish-tricks/
Back in college I would spend evenings coding away at every tiny idea I had regardless of how useful or viable it turned out to be. I would learn a new thing and apply it to my next project - only to find another thing and compare the two for the next project.^[It was freeing and satisfying as much as it was humbling.]

This week took me back to that time. I've been building something for our teams at 3|SHARE to make better decisions around project staffing, compensation, and overall employee satisfaction.

Instead of going with the tools I already knew, I chose a framework I'd never used (Django), a style system I'd been wanting to try (Tailwind), and a host of other architectural concepts I'd never really had a chance to investigate (e.g. cryptography).

A Lagom Mindset2022-03-15T00:00:00Z/journal/lagom-mindset/
I've lived a minimalist lifestyle for a pretty long time. Inevitably this leads to a love affair with the way certain regions of the world view life - like in Scandinavia or in Japan - and the way they design the items they themselves use.

Recently I was introduced to the idea of lagom, which means something like "in balance" or "just enough", and draws from Swedish culture. It isn't about doing without. It's about finding the exact right amount. Of anything. Of everything.

Lagom can be applied in nearly every situation. Some common ones I can think of right away.

Do focused work.
Working too much unbalances your overall state, but taking frequent breaks helps restore.

Keep only what you truly love in your home.
Be mindful about each item you introduce into your life.

Eat sustainably.
Not just in terms of the environment, but for your own mind and body.

Nothing here is revolutionary. Other concepts like minimalism, which is a little more broad, offer similar guidance for life. But there is something about lagom that cuts right to the core.

Balance. Appropriateness.

Words I can understand.

Playing with Pistachio2022-07-08T00:00:00Z/journal/playing-with-pistachio/
There's not much I don't like about the pistachio. I like their taste, I like the way the word looks by itself, and I very much enjoy the color.

<picture></picture>
The humble pistachio.

Needless to say, I've tweaked the site to reflect my enduring love for the humble drupe.^[Drupes are a fleshy fruit with a hard, dry seed inside. Many things we think of as nuts are actually drupes.] Maybe it's time I try my hand at making an inspired cocktail.

On Hurricanes2022-09-20T00:00:00Z/journal/on-hurricanes/
I'm writing this post feeling lucky just to have a flight out of the Dominican Republic in the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona. And on the flight I'll bring with me an experience not soon forgotten.

Our 2022 3|SHARE company meeting was held this weekend here in Punta Cana, which we knew might pose a risk given its position smack in the middle of hurricane season. Welp, yep.

The damage at our hotel was significant, but surmountable.

<picture></picture>
Hard Rock, meet Hurricane Fiona.
Sure, we had some leaks and power outages that kept us on our toes. But if we shuffled one resort to our right, we would have been without power, water, or food for days. Not to mention the impact on the nearby municipality, to which our hearts went out.

And yet, the spirit of my colleagues never wavered.

It had been nearly three years since our last in-person meeting^[We've had a company meeting every year since I joined the company 11 years ago. From 6 people to 104 people. It is our most-prized tradition.] due to COVID, so like many folks on the trip, the joy of seeing old faces (and new) far outweighed the logistical nightmare of travel back to our homes.

People coming together is rare these days. To see everyone do so first hand was an emotional reset.

Garlic is My Constant2022-10-01T00:00:00Z/journal/garlic-is-my-constant/
Another garlic festival is in the books. We returned to the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival with my parents for the second straight year - and frankly this has earned "tradition" status for us.

<picture></picture>
Garlic Vinegar Shots

While we were so far north, it only made sense to visit my alma mater, Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs, NY for the first time in nearly 10 years. Like most places, the area has changed dramatically since I last saw it, but some things have stayed the same. And by that I mean food.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, Uncommon Grounds serves breakfast sandwiches until 9pm. Why this isn't more common is one of life's deepest quandaries.

2022 Year In Review2022-12-31T00:00:00Z/journal/2022-year-in-review/
There's a saying that the only permanence is impermanence, and for many years I could relate to this through our urban exploration and business travel.

2022 felt more permanent in many ways. Almost as permanent as all the little houses in the neighborhood we now call home.

<picture></picture>
Was this taken in 2022 or 1922?

Not only are we now firmly entrenched in Philadelphia,^[We sold our house in Georgetown in a race to beat the crumbling housing market.] but Kileen graduated from her master's program and officially entered the Sex Therapy universe through an invitation by the founder to stay on indefinitely at PhIIRST.

<picture></picture>
View from the rooftop area of our offices in Boston, MA.

We fully embraced our East Coast roots - and newfound proximity - with trips to upstate New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.^[It certainly helped that COVID entered a new stage of its existence and allowed for more open travel.]

But we also managed to get to San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Vancouver (BC), Germany, France, the Dominican Republic, and many other places in between that we'd been meaning to explore.

We enter 2023 with some roots planted for the first time in a while, and I'm looking forward to how that fits (or hits?) us.

On Tweaks2023-01-20T00:00:00Z/journal/on-tweaks/
I used to be a little self-conscious about making (what I might downplay as) an insignificant change to this website. Or to a work project. Or even to the way I organize my clothes in a drawer. I always told myself I was the only one who would notice.

Then I realized that with each tweak I was actually giving myself an opportunity to apply a new technique to a system I'd already constructed. Even a margin update ^[Or a box shadow update... as some might notice happened last week.] would let me refactor the code and move toward a new way of thinking.

This entirely changed my perspective.

Charleston Wine + Food 20232023-03-10T00:00:00Z/journal/on-charleston-wine-and-food/
Last weekend Kileen and I visited her sister, Brianna, in Charleston, SC for their annual Wine + Food festival.

<picture></picture>
Culinary Village [Credit: Charleston Wine + Food]

In their own words:

The festival celebrates a collective of artists, culinary visionaries, craftsmen, bartenders, brewers, purveyors, couriers, farmers, events staff, wine pros, sanitation assistants, security guards, writers, musicians, prep chefs, servers, restaurateurs, guests, and – of course – Charlestonians (500 talent and over 38,000 guests to be exact).

The biggest draw by far is the Culinary Village, which is one part wine, spirits, and food tasting, and one part live entertainment. There was an entire tent dedicated to wine^[Our first stop, naturally.] and there were individual pop-ups from companies like Fords (gin), Pacifico (beer), and Charleston Mix (local Bloody Mary mix).

However, it really wasn't about large, global companies at this event. Everything felt very local, nicely curated, and ultimately a celebration of what makes the South Carolina Lowcountry region unique.

<picture></picture>
If we're honest, we also partook in a few Painkiller shots.

There were local craftsmen and artists less "hawking their wares" and more teaching others how they got into their work. There were many local restaurants doling out goodies like shrimp and grits, fish tacos, and oysters---presented in a variety of ways. In fact, you could even shuck them yourself if you wanted, but we felt day drinking and oyster shucking were not a great match for us^[Being a bystander was just as thrilling (due to aforementioned day drinkers).].

One thing stood out to us about this event as it compared to many other wine festivals we've experienced: the point was to relax and not overthink anything.

Were people sipping wine hoping the vendor would describe the floral notes they were tasting? Not a one.

Was the vendor pouring 1oz of Bloody Mary mix as an amuse-bouche? Try a 12oz pour with accoutrements.

Overall, the experience was one to remember. We'll certainly be back again in 2024.

Adobe Summit 20232023-03-22T00:00:00Z/journal/adobe-summit-2023/
I'm always a fan of Adobe Summit because it presents a chance for me to see colleagues I've not seen in a while.^[3|SHARE has been a remote company since its inception.]

Not only that but because I'm more on the technical side, it is absolutely fascinating for me to see the sales and marketing engines of each business really get into the content presented by Adobe. There's less emphasis on the actual implementation details when it comes to new technology and much more about the "art of the possible".

Vancouver Wine Festival2023-04-30T00:00:00Z/journal/seattle-vancouver-wine/
Welp, another Vancouver Wine Festival is in the books. To say the least, the event has become a bit of a tradition for us as it generally welcomes in the warmer spring temperatures.

<picture></picture>
The Vancouver Convention Centre is stunning at night.

Just a little bit about the event itself... the wine festival features over 1,000 wines available for tasting from between 100-200 wineries each year^[There are also individual tasting events and special dinners available throughout the week, but we have stuck to the main event so far.]. It is hosted in the Vancouver Convention Centre West, located directly on the harbour with gorgeous water views.

When we travel to Vancouver, we typically combine the trip with a few days in Seattle, which we did again this year. Frankly, Seattle will always deserve its own post - so more on that later.

That being said, this year we did a couple new things during our time in Vancouver that will absolutely become a part of all future trips.

Beach Day (In the PNW, no less.)

<picture></picture>
English Bay Beach was a total vibe.

We'd never walked to the other side of the island and had no idea English Bay Beach existed, but given that our trip featured 70° and sunny weather for the first time, it was hard not to gravitate toward water. We were not disappointed.

Salmon Tartare at The Parlour

<picture></picture>
Our incredible meal at The Parlour in Yaletown.

We always go to The Parlour in Yaletown for their excellent happy hour and this year was no different. However, we made a point to add their salmon tartare to our experience and, wow^[We fully realize that salmon tartare and decadent pizza don't often go together, but we stand by it.]. There's no way we leave this place without the tartare moving forward.

We eagerly look forward to when tickets for the 2024 event go on sale later this year.

Kileen and I were in New York City this weekend for a good friend's wedding and it was the first time we were able to get a split experience between Manhattan (work engagment) and Brooklyn (the wedding festivities).

Perhaps the highlight of the trip food-wise was the wedding dinner at Lilia, where we were really blown away by everything. The Mafaldini^[Often expressed as "mafaldine", "mafalde", or even "reginelle".] and Grilled Clams were standouts.

Rare that the two situations are coupled in one trip and frankly we were lucky to experience them in the proper order.

Cheers to the newlyweds!

A Conference Husband Around San Francisco2023-06-22T00:00:00Z/journal/conference-husband-around-san-francisco/
For the past 12 years, travel has been a huge part of my job.^[Well, until COVID-19, of course.] Overall, I loved the opportunity to meet a client, experience a new city, and extend the trip for Kileen and me to explore.

This past week was different.

AASECT

We were in San Francisco this week for Kileen to attend her first AASECT conference for sex therapy, counseling, and education.

In many ways this was the culmination of several years of graduate study, internship, and supervision, so needless to say we were both very, very excited.

Lastly, I'd be remiss if I forgot to mention Kileen and I saw Past Lives at an Alamo Drafthouse for the first time. It was the first movie theater we'd been in since 2012.

Meeting Colleagues

It turns out work wasn't all that far away...^[In this case, it was a good thing.] I had colleagues in town for a client so I was able to meet up with them for dinner one night.

It was a very pleasant surprise towards the end of already great trip.

Tales of the Cocktail2023-07-25T00:00:00Z/journal/tales-of-the-cocktail/
<picture></picture>
Tales of the Cocktail 2023 [Credit: TotC Event Website]

This week Kileen and I flew to New Orleans to attend the 2023 Tales of the Cocktail, which is an incredible event geared towards "bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts". ^[We clearly fell into the latter category.]

At Tales 2023, 47% of our attendees were returning guests, 53% of our attendees were attending for the first time, and 8% of our attendees were cocktail enthusiasts.

The event showcases new distilleries, highlights premier bars and their bartenders, and celebrates the art of crafting a good cocktail. And - most importantly - the organizers put on a helluvan event.

<picture><img alt="Mezcal? [Credit: Josh Brasted Photography]

We tasted all kinds of spirits - in recipes we've never heard of and in new takes on old favorites. Honestly, it was more educational than it was boozy, and I think that's the entire point.

Not only was the event outstanding, but this was my first time in New Orleans, and it marked the first time Kileen had been in town since she was a child (read: under 21...) so the experience was slightly different this time around.

Bonus: The self-guided tour at The Sazerac House is an absolute must. A few tasty samples complement a trip through the rich history of the city and its most famous cocktail.

Thought Stack2023-08-05T00:00:00Z/journal/thought-stack/
Much discussion is made around the technology stack you choose for a particular project. One must examine personal (or team) skill set, the strengths of each particular framework, and overall maintainability of the potential solution. ^[Among a variety of other considerations.]

However, there's a much more important stack that we maintain each day in our personal and professional lives and I call it a thought stack.

A thought stack is basically a transient list of thoughts you hold in your mind at any given moment. It is often the glue that binds each of the contexts you switch between in your daily tasks, but it could be as simple as a running list of distractions on which you eventually want to follow up.

The key is that this data is ephemeral. You keep it in short-term memory long enough to process it and move on to the next item. I often think of it as an in-memory array:

# accumulate things as you move through your day
stack = ["Heard the laundry ding",
"Saw Kileen called via FaceTime",
"Got a price alert for California flight"]
# grab the latest thing
latest = stack.pop()
# complete or otherwise address the thing
address_thing(latest)

Occasionally, you make a determination that something from the stack needs its own, dedicated context. This is more in line with reality, in which each stack likely sits within its own context (a meeting, a task, etc.), so the structure is actually more like a stack of stacks.

# start my day
contexts = []
# start to be productive
context = answering_email();
# accumulate things as you try to complete a single task
context.stack = ["Heard the laundry ding",
"Saw Kileen called via FaceTime",
"Got a price alert for California flight"]
# add the stack related to email to a broader context
contexts[] = context.stack
# determine whether some items need their own stack
analyze_stack_of_stacks(contexts)
# focus on the latest thing
for context in contexts:
address_thing(context.stack.pop())

There are many tools to aid you in managing your thought stack. Some people swear by todo lists, while others turn to more unstructured knowledge graphs that link concepts ad hoc.

Here's my current system:

Tot: Used for throwaway notes or to get something out of my head so I can stay focused on the current task.

Things 3: Eventually all real "todos" make their way into a project here. This is where I officially mark something as done.

Bear: Evergreen notes that were once part of a stack are formalized here. Often these started as Tot notes and at some point contained a todo or two.

Maccy: This is admittedly a tool for my tools. I use this clipboard manager to make sure I didn't lose something I copied when I copy something else.

50 Species of Garlic2023-10-01T00:00:00Z/journal/50-species-of-garlic/
Another year, another garlic festival, another great time. It really is quite fun to see people so enthusastic about a particular thing.

Upon reflection, I don't think I even care what the thing is so much as the effort people put into the thing.

<picture></picture>
Pierogies are just the beginning.

Pennsylvania Spirits 1012023-10-22T00:00:00Z/journal/pennsylvania-spirits-101/
Kileen and I were pleasantly surprised by a recent event we attended called the Philadelphia TASTE! Festival of Food, Wine & Spirits in Valley Forge, PA. While we're no strangers to spirit festivals, we'd never been to one in such a suburban environment and without a clear focus.

<picture></picture>
Barr Hill gave us a free jar of honey with a bottle purchase!

A couple key takeaways from the event:

I had no idea how many distilleries exist within Pennsylvania. Prohibition inspired many, many people to do their own thing.

Some of the representatives that delivered the tastings clearly have fun at these events. We made friends with the folks at Barr Hill from Vermont and they were an absolute blast.

Seeing people so passionate about their craft has become one of my own passions. Exactly how I feel at each of the garlic festivals we attend.

2023 Year in Review2023-12-31T00:00:00Z/journal/2023-year-in-review/
<picture></picture>
Vancouver has warmth and beaches?!

I'm pretty amazed that we're already heading into 2024 and I can't help but think about the following adage.

The days are long but the years are short.

Here are just seven (of many) highlights from the year:

Kileen attended her first sex therapy conference in San Francisco, CA and continues to further her therapy practice in Philadelphia.

We visited Kileen's sister in Charleston, SC for a wine festival and finally got to explore a city I've wanted to visit for a while.

We made our (almost) yearly trips to old stomping grounds in San Diego, Seattle, DC, and Providence. So much development in each city - every year.

We experienced Vancouver, BC when it was actually warm and it further proved just how beautiful that region is.

My good friend got married in New York as a precursor to the larger ceremony back in Ireland coming up in 2024.

We celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary in July, but really the entire year felt like a celebration. I feel so fortunate.

Kileen proposed to me (and only after 10 years of marriage!). I had been playfully bugging Kileen for years that I wanted her to propose "the next time" and she surprised me in France.

<picture></picture>
Feeling more confident about recreating my favorites at home.

Lastly, I've taken a shine to recreating many of my favorite foods and cocktails. What started out as a TikTok-fueled ramen obsession quickly became something more. I'm excited to see where I take this in 2024.

715 Snowless Days in Philly2024-01-17T00:00:00Z/journal/snow-in-philly/
Since moving to Philadelphia, we've not once seen measurable snow fall at our house. It's been a little weird.

It's especially weird because we aren't very far from where I grew up in Connecticut, where I spent at least four hours a weekend day sledding in our background. I really can't remember winter without snow until recently.

Finally, after 715 days without snow, flakes actually accumulated last night to push us past the 1" mark (and officially break the streak). Made me realize how enamoured I am with a streak of any kind.

I'm almost sad to see it end.

Italian Wine in Vancouver2024-03-02T00:00:00Z/journal/italian-wine-in-vancouver/
<picture></picture>
Welcome gift from The Loden Hotel in Vancouver

We just can't stay away from this wine festival. Each year the event features a different region, so each year there is a slightly different experience.

What made this year even more special was that two good friends of ours joined us in the festivities. It was their first time in Canada - and to a wine festival - which really heightened the experience for us.

Despite the focus on Italian wine, we always try a few Canadian wines each trip. The standout this year was a Cabernet Franc from Blasted Church in the Okanagan Valley.

I certainly do miss this view of the Georgetown waterfront. A work trip took me back to DC and I couldn't help myself from walking around our old neighborhood.

Sign me up for some Call Your Mother bagels and DAS Ethiopian.
